You won't believe it. We made the $100,000 match! BUT IT'S NOT OVER YET...
Shumla Archaeological Center

January, 2018

You make this preservation possible.
A Note from the Director
You won't believe it. We made the $100,000 match!

This year, a generous donor offered to match all individual donations to Shumla up to $100,000. We are so excited to report that we have received gifts totaling that amount and all were matched!

As you know, the Alexandria Project is Shumla's most ambitious project yet. It takes a lot to support a project of this scale. So...the Shumla Board has offered to extend the match to keep those gifts coming until the end of the year.

We have a $10,000 challenge gift on the table. If we receive $10,000 before the end of the year, the Board will match it!

If you have already given to Shumla this year, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity and support of our mission. If you haven't, please do! Your gift will be matched and make such a difference.
See below for quick FAQs on giving to Shumla.
We wish you all the best this holiday season and always!
Jessica and all the Shumla Board and Staff
Help us reach the challenge match,
$10,000 by December 31st!
Frequently Asked Questions
1) What are the ways to give?
  • You can send a check to Shumla at P.O. Box 627, Comstock, TX 78837 or you can visit and make your gift online through our secure portal.
2) Is Shumla a non-profit 501(c)(3)? Will my gift be tax deductible?
  • Yes! Our EIN number is 74-2869788.
3) How are the 2017 Match and the Alexandria Project Pledge Drive related?
  • Great question! The pledge drive is Shumla's campaign to support the on-going work of the Alexandria Project over four years. Those who are willing to pledge to donate to Shumla each of the four years of the project (2017 to 2020) receive special benefits for their commitment. For some, however, a four year commitment isn't their cup of tea - and that's okay too! Any individual gift received in 2017 will be applied to the match, whether it is part of a pledge or a single-year gift.
4) More questions?
Are you a college student who is looking for a summer internship in 2018? Do you know one? Tell them about Shumla!
We are looking to fill two internship roles: 1) An intern to work alongside our Research Team recording rock art, and 2) A science major interested in conducting research as an intern in our chemical laboratory, specifically working on plasma oxidation preparation of paint samples for radiocarbon dating.
As an archaeology research center, Shumla's scope is the study of Lower Pecos rock art. However, the skills our interns learn can be applied to many academic disciplines and professional careers (archaeology, art, chemistry, photography, GIS mapping, engineering, computer science, IT, and more!).
The deadline to apply for a summer internship is March 1st!  Email our Research Director at for more information.

Meet the Newest Member of the Shumla Family
-- Taco the Tacoma --
Have you ever seen a more beautiful truck? Honestly.
Taco the Tacoma can take the Shumla team anywhere we need to go.
Taco was donated to Shumla by Toyota of Del Rio, a member of the Khoury Group and joins our other Shumla truck, Yoda. Yoda was also given by Toyota of Del Rio and the Khoury Group back in 2008. Thanks to them, Shumla has a "fleet" of indestructible workhorses.
The team cried at the big reveal. What an incredible surprise! This gift will contribute in a huge way to the success of the Alexandria Project.
It will transform our day-to-day operations. With this double cab 4 wheel drive truck, we will be able to take the entire five member research team to hard-to-access sites with ease.
Is it really ours??
The very next day, Taco weathered the first snowfall of the season. Just the best Christmas present ever.
Thank you Toyota of Del Rio and Khoury Group
Spotlight on Shumla Volunteers

In this season of giving we'd like to highlight those who give their time to Shumla.

We've had some wonderful volunteers this year.
  • Photographer Daniel Rodriguez shared his expertise with Shumla during our Alexandria Project pilot in March.
  • Our Rancher Steward BBQ volunteers are a HUGE part of making that event a success every year.
  • Artist Didier Bardon worked with Shumla to apply his artistic skill to figure illustrations and field work.
  • Margaret Berrier, also known as Marglyph because she is so involved with rock art studies and with ARARA (American Rock Art Research Association), worked in the field with the team on the Alexandria Project digital documentation.
Thank you Shumla volunteers!
